■ Pray together: Give thanks for your experiences, ask God for help where you need it.
■ Pray together to learn new things about God and that your relationship with God deepens and gets stronger.
John 10:27-28
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
Acts 9:10-19
10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
11The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.12In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
13“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem.14And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
15But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.16I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”
17Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,19and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.
■ This is how you can pray: “Dear heavenly Father, I thank You that You will speak to me today through Your Holy Spirit. I submit my soul and hence my will, my emotions, and my intellect to Your authority. I want to reach out to You and do only what You tell me to do. Make the eyes and ears of my heart sensitive to You. Teach me to discern Your speaking and my thoughts, so that I am lead by the Holy Spirit and not by my own wishful thinking or my surroundings.”
Basic principles:
Jesus is our role model in everything. He did only what He saw the Father do (John 5:19). We are called to live the same way. Therefore it is vital that we learn to hear and discern God’s voice.
Life Story:
Gladys Aylward (born on February 24, 1902, in London) came to Yangcheng in the Chinese province of Shanxi in 1932 to tell people about Jesus.
During the Chinese-Japanese war she took in many orphans. In 1940, the situation worsened. After Japanese aircraft bombed Yangcheng, she asked God what they could do. “She is waiting in her halfway destroyed chamber with a profound faith for an order from her King. Her soul is searching out and hearkening, just as Samuel did when he said: “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). And the Lord speaks, and her soul receives faith in His order: “Flee...!” There was no trace of doubt left. The Lord spoke, therefore she has to leave.”
(Translated from: Mijnders-van Woerden, M.A.: Gladys Aylward – Die Frau mit dem Buch, p.182).
After hearning God’s word, she and almost a hundred chidren fled by foot over the mountains to Xi’an. On her way they continuously encountered situations, where they needed to ask God for directions and heard from Him what they should do. In doing so, they experienced His guidance and protection.
